Our Mexico Fair Trade Organic is grown high in the Sierra Madre mountains near the Guatemala border and Huehuetenango, in Chiapas. With nearly 500 active cooperative members, Campesinos Ecologicos de la Sierra Madre de Chiapas (CESMACH), along with Finca Triunfo Verde (FTV), have all the right conditions where heirloom coffee varieties (Bourbon, Typica) are grown at a great altitude (1200–1750masl), with passionate coffee growers who want to produce high-quality lots.
While Fair Trade and organic-certified coffees from Mexico are fairly common, as many smallholder producers have organized themselves into democratically run cooperatives due to the small average farm size (2–5 hectares) and long history with the Fair Trade movement. Legal obstacles have made it historically difficult for women coffee producers to own land and become card-holding cooperative members; as a result, the Women Coffee Producers projects with co-ed cooperatives has been developed. These WCP lots are purchased with a gender-equity premium on top of the usual base price, and that premium is paid directly to the women growers for use as they see fit.
Brew method suggestions: Espresso, filter, and Aeropress.
